I laugh often. I find laughter to be fulfilling. I am laughing now as I type this, in all actuality.
My laughter, in this moment, resonates from understanding. I had a conversation recently. In the conservation, a jokes premise was revealed.
I will not prolong the revelation. So here we go...When a joke is told, the intent is to evoke laughter. With that statement being (for the sake of discussion) substantiated, why would I, as the recipient, choose to laugh when I realize the joke hurts? It seems what has been evoked is pain. Remember, the intent was to evoke laughter.
I am not naive. Through life's experiences, I am quite familiar with laughter and pain. In all familiarity, I realize laughter masks pain, but what does pain mask?
The next time, a joke is presented. Stop and think, Am I laughing at the joke or the recipient of the joke...
I did, and I was surprised when in reflection I discovered I was wearing pain in a perfectly sized mask.
Laughter is always fulfilling. However, it may not always be internally funny.
Blessings,
DLR
